Blade Runner Project

 We decided to incorporate the 3-D feature of a head to resemble that of Rachael, representative of many of the themes we intend to discuss in the presentation. On one side of the head lies images of a piano, spider, and a photograph of Tyrell’s niece and her mother, all indicative of the memories implanted in Rachael. The eye on the left side of the face is that of the artificial owl, a nod to the multicultural symbol of an owl tied to knowledge. This is juxtaposed by a hand-illustrated model of a human brain, below which resides the blue eye of Roy as seen in his last moments, delivering his most “human” quote. Our presentation aimed to elaborate on the notion of human vs artificial intelligence, and highlight the gray area between the two (hence the black and white color scheme of our pictures); how it may be an impossible discernment. 


After presenting to the class and having other groups display their projects, I think we realized a need for greater dimensionality in the design of the project itself. One idea we actually had very early on was to have a two-sided poster with the head cut in half and glued to both sides, but were wary of overcomplicating the project. Looking back, though it may have been a little conceptually challenging to think through this layout, it would have ultimately provided a more engaging, visually stimulating piece.


Below are some notes from each of us:

Gaby:

-pictures one level of reality

-escaping implemented thoughts necessary to become human

-forming new emotional memories vs emotional attachment to false memories

-owl represents knowledge across many cultures, athena goddess of knowledge

-memories intrinsically emotional

-eyes as a window to the soul 

-the “cogito” Rene Descartes, proof of existence 

-physical vs metaphysical, Descartes’ notion of dualism

-clear line between the two realities, not so clear w human and nonhuman

-physical represented by pictures and attached emotions (“looking” at something and feeling)

-metaphysical new memories made over time (“thinking” about something and feeling)


Grace:

“I don’t know if it’s me or Tyrell’s niece.”

-Rachel starts with implanted memories from Tyrell’s niece that makes her feel human 

-After she learns she’s a replica she starts to question everything and feels less human 

-As she gets to know Deckard she she starts to form attachments to him and form actual feelings she can rely on being truly hers

The head on the board symbolizes Rachel

-The half with the replica eye, piano, and spider represent Tryell’s niece’s memories and the replica side of her. The memories she had from Tryrell’s niece were not truly hers and made her more replica than human

-The half of the head with the human eye and the brain represent Rachel after she met Deckard. After she met Deckard she formed her own memories with him and made an attachment to him which shows how she had feelings for him. These feelings for Deckard are what made her more human than replica in the end


Sophia:

“Replicants weren’t supposed to have feelings. Neither were blade runners..I didn't know why a replicant would collect photos…They needed memories…”

-This quote reflects how memories were implanted into replicants to make them more human

-The photos were used for the replicants to make connections and believe they formed bonds in the past so they could form bonds in the future 

-Memories play a big role in humanity


“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die.”

-Roy’s monologue shows how he himself formed his own memories - even though there were implanted memories - Roy becomes more human by forming his own memories throughout his life 

-The memories are lost like tears in the rain and time to die - mean that when he dies, all his memories will die with him, just as this happens with humans too - what the dove symbolizes on the poster

The Love, Death, + Robots episode I liked the most was Zima Blue . The reason I liked this episode so much was because of the symbolism of simplicity. Zima's murals start out as these complex art works of space. He then adds a blue square in the center of the art. This simple square is surrounded by complex space but the square is the one thing which stands out most to the people. As Zima gets more famous and starts to explore the cosmos his art becomes more and more of the simple blue square. He allows the simplicity of the color "Zima Blue" to take over his art. In the end Zima is a complex robot who has explored all the universe has to offer. After becoming the most complex organism, Zima decided to go back to his most simple form for his final piece of art. He has learned the simplicity of life is much more valuable than the most complex form. Hon 255 Final Thoughts

 I have really enjoyed this class. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me think about all different sorts of things. I got to see the perspective of all different types of majors and personalities which to me is the most important thing when learning. Being able to compare my major to topics that had nothing to do with my major taught me so many different things. I was able to see how my major impacted different aspects of life and how movies impacted my major. Approaching the topic of AI and futuristic technology was difficult at times but always interesting. I'm excited to see how I use this class in the future and to see where our future technology actually goes after watching all these movies.

Final Project

 The movie we chose for our final project was WALL-E. As a group we want to explore the possibilities of the plot of WALL-E becoming our future. With the way climate change and garbage is piling up our future could very easily be the same plot. There are also a lot more advancements in artificial intelligence that could lead to more lazy humans and more reliability on AI. We wanted to add a 3D aspect to our poster to make it stick out. We also added the plant surrounded by garbage to show how there is still hope for our future. Just like in the movie, finding the plant brings hope to the humans that they will be able to live on earth once again. WALL-E really shows how even if we have a good life in space, nothing can beat walking around on earth and breathing fresh air.
