Final Project

Image
The movie we chose for our final project was WALL-E. As a group we want to explore the possibilities of the plot of WALL-E becoming our future. With the way climate change and garbage is piling up our future could very easily be the same plot. There are also a lot more advancements in artificial intelligence that could lead to more lazy humans and more reliability on AI. We wanted to add a 3D aspect to our poster to make it stick out. We also added the plant surrounded by garbage to show how there is still hope for our future. Just like in the movie, finding the plant brings hope to the humans that they will be able to live on earth once again. WALL-E really shows how even if we have a good life in space, nothing can beat walking around on earth and breathing fresh air.

Blade Runner Project

Image
We decided to incorporate the 3-D feature of a head to resemble that of Rachael, representative of many of the themes we intend to discuss in the presentation. On one side of the head lies images of a piano, spider, and a photograph of Tyrell’s niece and her mother, all indicative of the memories implanted in Rachael. The eye on the left side of the face is that of the artificial owl, a nod to the multicultural symbol of an owl tied to knowledge. This is juxtaposed by a hand-illustrated model of a human brain, below which resides the blue eye of Roy as seen in his last moments, delivering his most “human” quote. Our presentation aimed to elaborate on the notion of human vs artificial intelligence, and highlight the gray area between the two (hence the black and white color scheme of our pictures); how it may be an impossible discernment.  After presenting to the class and having other groups display their projects, I think we realized a need for greater dimensionality in the...

Hon 255 Final Thoughts

I have really enjoyed this class. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me think about all different sorts of things. I got to see the perspective of all different types of majors and personalities which to me is the most important thing when learning. Being able to compare my major to topics that had nothing to do with my major taught me so many different things. I was able to see how my major impacted different aspects of life and how movies impacted my major. Approaching the topic of AI and futuristic technology was difficult at times but always interesting. I'm excited to see how I use this class in the future and to see where our future technology actually goes after watching all these movies.

5th Element Fashion Show

Image
This fashion show definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am not a very fashionable person to begin with so trying to make something out of upcycled goods was very difficult. I really liked the idea of using upcycled material to make the outfits though. Millions of clothes go to waste every year and I think people forget how valuable thrift stores and the things lying around your house can be. The reason my group decided to use plastic bags was because of how much of a waster they are. Every you go plastic bags are seen floating down the street. We also noticed that many of the lower class people made their outfits out of whatever they could find and like said above plastic bags are easily found. In my opinion one of the most exciting things to look forward to in future fashion is the hair. I think no matter what the close look like crazier hair is going to become more and more accepted. In the future there is going to be hair in all different colors and shapes. Even now co...

Interstellar 50 Years From the Future

Exploring the world in 50 years I think was an easy task. The movie itself was not too far off about were our planet is heading. Everyone talks about climate change and how bad it is but I don't feel like anyone actually does anything. I will even admit that I am probably guilty of this too though. I do agree, though, with the movie where NASA had been shut down. I think that instead of spending all this money into running away we should be putting more money into saving our planet. More money should be put into recycling centers and initiatives to get people to recycle. The sad thing is if someone did tell us what the future was like I don't think many people would listen. I do think there would be panic for a couple of months but then everything would go back to the way things are. It's really sad that people don't care as much as they should. If everyone did work towards the goal of saving our planet I definitely think we would see a massive change.

Favorite Fashion Designer

Image
I am not very big on fashion so I looked at some of the most famous fashion designers for this assignment. Christian Dior was one of the designers that stood out the most to me. Dior is mainly known for his extravagance in women wear which is what I really like. He designs are very gown like, enunciating dresses. All of his dress really show a women's shape and are very feminine. They are also very simple designs and there is not a lot of crazy patterns. A lot of fashion designers go for crazy shaped and loud prints which I am not a big fan of. Dior really keeps it simple and creates designs to make the woman look good. One collection I really like from him is his Designer of Dreams exhibit. I really like the pink and light colors and simple floral patterns for the clothes. I also like the form fitting bodice and flowing skirt. I think Dior really understands how to make a woman look sexy and how to show off their curves. He keeps it simple with his designs and colors which is some...

Interstellar Ending

I thought the ending of Interstellar was a mixture of happiness and sadness. It was happy in the way that Cooper did get to see Murph at least one more time but it was sad that they did not get to spend all the time they deserved together. The scene where we learn it was Cooper communicating to Murph in the past was very interesting to me. Past Cooper knew there was a message from someone saying to stay but he chose to ignore it. That makes me wonder why future Cooper thought he would listen when he knew he chose not to. I liked how everything came together at the end and you found out who was really communicating with Murph. I did think that there were some questions left unanswered at the very end. I do think it would be cool if they made another movie answering some of those questions.

Ready Player One in Real Life

Image
Exploring Ready Player One in real life was really interesting. I definitely thought it was going to be awkward talking to someone over a game but it was really easy. Exploring Destiny 2 turned out. to be really fun. The person we ended up talking to was really nice and helpful. His character design was also very interesting. He mainly chose his character based on strength for the game. His character was female but he chose armor that made it look as bulky and manly as he could. I think he did this in order to relate to his character more because he was also male. This assignment really pushed me out of my comfort zone to talk to a stranger and explore what they were like.

Second Life

Second Life is a virtual reality game that allows people to explore new worlds and meet new people. Second  Life is very similar to Ready Player One .  Anyone can join the game and be anyone they want. They can live a glamourous life and make their avatar look like anything they want. Second Life is great way to escape reality and be someone you truly want to be. Both Second Life and Ready Player One demonstrate how easy it is to become someone you're not in virtual reality. For some people this is good because it allows them to escape the poor hand life dealt them. For others becoming someone your not can change how you see yourself in reality and can really affect your confidence. One difference between Second Life and Ready Player One is Second Life is being used to hold remote meetings. This is a cool new take on virtual learning and remote working caused by covid. In Ready Player One it seemed you never really played with those you knew in re...

Ghost in the Shell "Three Laws of Robtics"

Exploring the "Three Laws of Robotics" within Ghost in the Shell was a lot more complicated than expected. The aspects of being half human and half robotic rally blur the lines of where one falls within the laws. I believe  Kusanagi really showed that being a cyborg does not take away from your human side. I really enjoyed writing the essay in a cartesian manner. It really allowed me to thoroughly explore both sides of the argument. I don't think one could have reached a true conclusion unless you did it in a cartesian manner. Ghost in the Shell really allowed one to see where the future of robotics can go and what questions will arise with it. I believe when we do get to time like that it will once again show a split in the social classes. This will create questions towards the "Three Laws of Robotics" and towards the fairness of cyborgs. I think Ghost in the Shell just graces the pot of questions toward cyborgs and other artificial intelligence.

Pinocchio vs. A.I. Artificial Intelligence

The movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence references Pinocchio multiple times. There are many symbols and comparisons in the book to Pinocchio . The movie has parts of the book read out loud and figures of the story present. Both A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Pinoccio are about artificial boys whose only goals are to become real boys. Both David and Pinocchio learn similar lessons and go on a similar adventure in order to learn what it truly means to be a real boy.  Pinocchio and David are both naive in the beginning of their life. They are very curious about the world and what it is like to be finally living. In A.I. Artificial Intelligence , David follows Monica around the first day he is there so he can see all she does. This scared Monica because she is not used to him but David does not understand he is doing anything wrong. To him he is having fun and keeping her company as she works. No one has taught him the weirdness of following someone around. On Pinocchio’s first da...

Star Trek Technology Today

It was really interesting to explore Star Trek in today's society. I always knew Star Trek had a huge fan base and that it has affected many generations. I don't realise the technology within the Star Trek was so influential though. There was definitely a lot of ideas people have gather from the show that they are trying to make real. It's really cool to think about the creator of all these Star Trek ideas. It must be cool for them to see all their ideas come to life and to be able to influence people in such a huge way. It's also cool how Star Trek has influenced so many fields. In our class their are so many different majors and all of us could find something related to our major. The Star Trek ship they have created to explore the Atlantic is really exciting. I'm excited to see all the information it can bring us and to see what other Star Trek technology can come to life in the future. pitch.com/public/24638c10-c19e-4809-bc05-b99b693c8977

The Matrix Debate

Choosing between the red and blue pill is a choice  that will change your life forever. Deciding to pick one over the other is greatly impacted by who you are as a person and how you can change the world. As someone who is not a strong willed person I do not believe taking the red pill would be the right choice for me. In order for someone to take the red pill they need to be confident in who they are and strong enough to do what is necessary in order to defeat the robots. The red pill allows the person who takes it to have free will but it also puts them right into the middle of the fight. Morpheus very strategically picks who he offers the red pill to and he chooses those with strong minds who can handle going back into the matrix knowing what it truly is. There are many people who would not be strong enough to do this. Many people's minds would collapse going back into the matrix knowing it was all fake. The blue pill allows those who are not ready and not st...

Blade Runner Quote

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die." To many this quote symbolizes how when we die everything we know and everything we are drifts away into nothing. All the memories we hold dear and true wash away with the rain and are forgotten. For me, I do not believe this is true. I believe others hold our memories with them and we continue to live through those still alive. I lost my brother not long ago and one of the importants things he taught me was to make memories. By making memories with other people you are truly living and will not be forgotten. By making memories you are experiencing the world and doing things worth remembering. By making memories with others you will forever live with them even long after you have passed. My brother continues to live with me ...

Philip K. Dick

Philip K. Dick was a phenomenal science fiction writer who wrote 44 novels and about 121 short stories. Dick inspired others to imagine the future. He pushed people to see what humans could create and all the possibilities out there waiting to be developed. Dick showed there were no limits to what could be imagined. In the 1950s and 60s people were not thinking about such things like emotional robots and flying cars. Philip K. Dick had such an impact on science fiction literature and movies because he was the first to truly push what humans thought was possible. In any science fiction movie created there is alway signs of Philip K. Dick within them. Dick wrote a book called "Eye in the Sky." This book is about how like is a stimulation. Series like the Matrix and Black Mirror have used this idea and created blockbuster entertainment. Philip K. Dick was always making people question what they believed and paved the way for others to do so. Dick created so many different pos...
